New Volvo S60, Cars That Can See

Volvo S60 with high-tech engine technology. Pedestrian Detection with the award-winning Full Auto Brake Technology used by the All-New Volvo S60 was rewarded as the Safety Car category winner at the annual awards from the media BusinessCar techies.

The technology was first used in the world can detect pedestrians in front of the car. If the driver was too late to respond, automatically braking the car in total so that pedestrians can avoid accidents.

"Volvo's commitment as a pioneer in the development of safety technologies unsurpassed in the automotive industry. And that's why the key to winning the Volvo Car Business techies for two consecutive years, "said Paul Barker, Editor-BusinessCar. Pedestrian Detection System for Volvo cars brought into areas not accessible for any manufacturer. "Volvo's City Safety is also a feature."

This system consists of a radar unit mounted in the grille the car, a camera in front of the interior rearview mirror, and a control unit. Radar task is to detect objects in front of the car and to determine the distance, while the camera is functioning to detect the type of object in front. This system can detect pedestrians, putting more than 80 cm, including small children.

In an emergency, the driver got a warning through the sound and lights in the head-up windshield display, but the brakes have not worked. If the driver does not respond to these warnings and the car accident was imminent, then the full braking automatically commanded directly by the 'brains' car.

This technology only works when the car is running under 34 km / hr. With Pedestrian Detection is expected to reduce the risk of a fatal accident by 20%, and up to 85% in certain cases.

Volvo sale to Geely to close next week

Volvo may finally part ways with Ford by the end of next week. The Detroit Free Press reports that the Blue Oval is aiming to close its $1.8 billion sale of the Swedish automaker to Geely in as little as 10 days, though Ford has merely said that its goal is to hand over the Volvo reigns by the end of the third quarter of this year. The move to send Volvo packing is part of Ford CEO Alan Mulally's strategy to slim the company down to focus on its core brands – a scheme that seems to be working so far.

In the meantime, Volvo managed to turn a profit of $53 million before taxes in the second quarter of this year. The news is a big leap from the same time last year – in the second quarter of 2009, the brand lost a heady $237 million. Ford's sale of Volvo seems to have been on glacial pace, partly due to the number of government agencies in the U.S., Europe and China that were needed to sign off on the deal. By the time the ink dries on the last document, Geely will have secured the largest overseas acquisition of any Chinese automaker so far.

Volvo Follow The Tokyo Motor Show

new Folvo in the tokyo car contest show

Volvo, the Swedish unit of Ford Motor Co., will not participate in the Tokyo Motor Show this fall.

"We have evaluated our participation at motor shows for 2009 to see how we can make the most out of our resources, and this year we decided not to participate at Tokyo," Volvo spokeswoman Maria Bohlin said today in an e-mail.

Ford Motor Co. said earlier this week it would not participate in the show, but a spokeswoman said she could not comment on plans for Volvo or Mazda Motor Corp.

Mazda will participate in this year's show. Last year, Ford raised $540 million by cutting its stake in Mazda from 33.4 percent to just over 13 percent, but the two automakers will continue joint ventures and the sharing of vehicle platforms and powertrains.

Ford joined General Motors and Chrysler LLC in skipping the event this year. Pullouts by non-Japanese automakers and concerns raised by some Japanese automakers stemming from the global auto sales slowdown have cast doubt on whether the October 21-22 show will take place.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association will decide by early next month whether to postpone the show, Toshihiro Iwatake, JAMA's executive director, told Automotive News earlier this week.

If the event is canceled, the next Tokyo Motor Show would be in 2011, Iwatake said.

Several auto companies pulled out of the Detroit auto show, which opens to the public tomorrow. The missing companies included Nissan Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Corp., Porsche AG, Rolls-Royce and Land Rover. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. canceled its corporate presence, but local Mitsubishi dealers put together an exhibit.

Some participating automakers, including federal loan recipients Chrysler LLC and General Motors, toned down their Detroit displays and built single-story exhibition stands to save money.
